Haverhill councilors deny being the 'client' of sex spa

HAVERHILL — A worker for an accused madam told police a Haverhill city councilor was among the hundreds of clients and numerous public servants served by The Day Spa for Gentlemen in Lawrence.

Before the nine councilors walked into their meeting last night, each of the members denied being the client. Most of them said they were shocked by the allegation. Two said they received phone calls from another media organization prior to the meeting.

“A reporter asked me to guess which one of you visits whores,” Councilor Mary Ellen Daly O’Brien, the only female on the council, told her colleagues.

Councilor Council LePage said he also received a phone message from another news organization, but that he did not return it.

Councilor John Michitson speculated the information in the police report could refer to a former Haverhill councilor or a councilor from another city. Councilor Michael Hart joked the informant probably meant the client was someone on the School Committee.

Council President Robert Scatamacchia said he didn’t have much to say about the matter until someone was identified by name.

“I’ve been on the council for 10 years and we are a very professional and cordial group, so I’m not going to speculate about one of them,” Daly O’Brien said. “The truth is I’ll be very surprised if it turns out to be true.”

Lori Barron, 50, of Salem, N.H. was arraigned yesterday on several felony charges including maintaining a house of prostitution, deriving support from prostitution, unlawful wiretapping, extortion and photographing unsuspecting nude persons.

Police said the brothel’s clientele includes police officers, firefighters, teachers and a city councilor, but they have not released any names. Some were secretly videotaped having sex with workers at the spa.

Police said Barron also blackmailed her employees with videotapes she secretly took of them performing sex acts on customers at the so-called massage parlor called “The Day Spa for Gentlemen” on Broadway. Four of her employees were interviewed by police prior to the arrest warrant being sought.

Barron was released on $30,000 cash bail shortly after her arraignment.
