Attempted murder suspect indicted

Valentin faces 27 charges in two states stemming from Salem case

BRENTWOOD — A Methuen man has been indicted for allegedly kidnapping and attempting to murder his former girlfriend in a Salem motel room.

Walton Valentin, 31, was recently indicted on seven charges by a Rockingham Superior Court grand jury. He has also been indicted on 20 charges by an Essex County grand jury in Massachusetts, including assault and battery and stalking.

Valentin is charged with trying to shoot the 31-year-old woman after forcing her at gunpoint to drive her minivan from Lawrence to Salem.

Valentin allegedly jumped into the woman’s Dodge Caravan outside her Lawrence home on Nov. 9 and held a handgun to her stomach. He then ordered her to drive to the Park View Inn in Salem, police said.

As Valentin held her at gunpoint, he said, “If you don’t go with me, I will kill you and your mother in the Dominican Republic,” according to a Lawrence police report.

The woman told police once they were in the motel room, Valentin pointed a handgun at her and pulled the trigger.

After the gun jammed, Valentin tried to strangle her and beat her on the head with the gun, knocking her unconscious, police said. Valentin then fled the motel in the van, abandoning the vehicle in Andover, police said.

The Lawrence woman called police after regaining consciousness. Officers found her covered with blood and suffering severe lacerations to her face and head.

She was taken to Parkland Medical Center in Derry, where she was treated and released. Valentin was captured in the bathroom of a New York deli five days later. He is now being held at the Middleton Jail in Massachusetts.

Valentin faces decades in prison if convicted on the New Hampshire charges alone. Some charges are punishable by 10 to 20 years.

He was indicted on felony charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, criminal threatening and theft. Valentin was also indicted on a charge of violating a protective order, a misdemeanor.
