Suspect indicted in Windham home invasion

BRENTWOOD — A Taunton, Mass., man has been indicted on charges he broke into a Windham home, bound a woman’s hands with zip ties and terrorized her with a shotgun.

Luis Carvalho, 31, of 26 Fourth St. was recently indicted on six charges by a Rockingham Superior Court grand jury in connection with the home invasion at 5 Glance Road.

Police received a 911 call from the woman shortly after midnight on April 15. She said people were banging on her front door and trying to get inside.

Carvalho and another suspect, bringing masks and gloves, broke a window to enter the home, according to indictments. They struggled with the woman and bound her. Carvalho allegedly pointed a 12-gauge shotgun at her. She was not hurt, police said.

The first police officer to arrive saw someone running from the home and chased him. Another suspect jumped into a car and sped away, driving from Glance Road to Mammoth Road, according to a police report written by Capt. Carl Wagner.

An officer tried to stop the car as it traveled north, but the driver crashed near the Romans Road intersection and fled. Area police departments and state police were called to help. Windham officers and a state police canine unit found Carvalho about 2:25 a.m.

The search for the second person was suspended about 5 a.m. The suspect was never found.

Carvalho faces charges of kidnapping, burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary, Class A felonies each punishable by seven and a half to 15 years in state prison.

He was also charged with criminal threatening with a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a firearm, each Class B felonies punishable by three and half to seven years in prison.

Carvalho is felon because in October 2005, he was convicted of felony assault with a dangerous weapon in Suffolk County Superior Court in Massachusetts. In addition, Carvalho was charged with false imprisonment.
