Police avert Lawrence gunfight

LAWRENCE — Police nearly encountered gunfire early yesterday while responding to break up a large fight at Broadway and Lowell Street.

At least two victims were stabbed during the fight, but couldn’t tell police who attacked them. Police said one victim was stabbed in the back and the other in the left flank.

Security guard Joel Figueroa of the Bar Rock Cafe told police the fight started outside the club and that he heard someone fire a gun.

Soon after responding to the 2 a.m. call, Lt. James Raso said he noticed a man pull something out of his waist band while running on the sidewalk. He then observed the suspect holding a black handgun pointed in his direction as he had his gun drawn and pointed at the suspect.

“I felt that the suspect was considering firing upon us but knew he was outnumbered and just gave up,” Raso wrote in his report, noting that Officers Patrick Noonan and Adam Goujon stood by.

Elvis DeJesus, 22, of 85 High St., second floor, lowered his gun and dropped it as Raso had commanded.

“Officer (Christopher) Cote, Goujon and myself handcuffed suspect after a brief struggle on the ground,” according to Raso.

DeJesus was charged with disorderly conduct, affray, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault to murder.

Police recovered a 9 mm Smith and Wesson handgun with eight rounds in the magazine.

DeJesus told Raso that he was drinking inside the Bar Rock and was getting assaulted by people he didn’t know.

“Suspect then stated he found the gun on the street and picked it up for protection,” Raso wrote in his report.

“I told him we saw him take it out of his waist band,” Raso said.

Also charged in the incident were Julissa Mendez, 21, of 17 Bowdoin St., Lawrence, for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, and Richard Evans, 23, of 10 Custer St., Lawrence, for disorderly conduct.
