Man shot in leg during hold-up of Kailey Market

LAWRENCE — Four armed men wearing Halloween masks stormed into the Kailey Market, 324 Prospect St., around 9:15 Thursday night, shooting one person in the leg before making off with an unknown amount of cash.

According to a police report on the incident, officers were dispatched to the store on a report of shots fired and a hold-up alarm.

Based on interviews with witnesses inside and outside the store, as well as the gunshot victim, police determined that the men were all armed. One of them may have been carrying a red golf bag that had a shotgun sticking out of it, another was carrying a rifle, and the other two had handguns. They also wore masks, including a “joker” mask, one witness said, and another wearing what was described simply as a “green” mask.

They entered the store and yelled “get the money” in Spanish.

One witness, who was in the store at the time, said he heard the men yell and when they saw him, they ordered him to lay on the floor on his stomach and to look the other way. While there, he heard a shot from inside the store and then four more from outside as the men fled.

Police interviewed the gunshot victim in the hospital. The man, who was shot in the leg, was conscious and alert and told police that he was in the store when he heard someone yelling. The men jumped him, knocked him to the floor, shot him in the leg and then ordered him to roll over onto his stomach.

Police said the store was under video surveillance. They found a smashed cash register on the floor behind the counter.

The incident remains under investigation.
