Basement fire forces family from home

ANDOVER — A basement fire in a house at 4 Fosters Pond Road yesterday morning forced a family of four to seek other shelter.

Engine companies from Tewksbury and Lawrence were called in to help battle the two-alarm blaze that broke out shortly before 7 a.m. Residents were already out of the home when the first crews arrived.

Fire damage was contained to the basement and first floor of the Colonial-style home. Smoke damage occurred throughout the house, “which will remain uninhabitable for some time,” according to Fire Chief Michael B. Mansfield. Cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A firefighter was taken to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, Mansfield said.

Town firefighters needed additional help in battling the fire because of the frigid temperatures.

Units from Lawrence, Wilmington and North Andover provided mutual aid station coverage during the fire. Firefighters had the fire under control by 7:30 a.m.
