Firefighters free Route 125 driver from mangled truck

ANDOVER — Police, firefighters and paramedics were tied up at accidents that occurred almost simultaneously early last night on Route 125 and Interstate 93.

The more serious crash occurred at 5:22 p.m. when a pickup truck driver lost control and careened off Route 125 just after Prospect Road near the North Andover line.

Firefighters worked for 40 minutes to free the man, who was in his 20’s, from the 2004 Ford Ranger pickup after went off the highway, up an embankment and plowed into some trees, said Andover Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Connors.

Crews used the Jaws of Life and other extrication tools to free the young man from the truck. Connors said the crash victim was conscious and alert and did not complain of any pain. Firefighters removed the doors, the roof, and eventually lifted the dashboard off the man’s leg and freed him from the wreckage.

The pickup “had heavy front-end damage,” he said. “It was a long extrication ... But a great effort by all.”

Police closed Route 125 while firefighters were working. “Everyone contributed to a positive ending,” Connors said.

The driver, who was not identified by police last night, was taken to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment, Connors said.

Before Route 125 reopened to traffic, MassHighway was called to scrape and sand the road.

At 5:29 p.m., police and firefighters received a report of a rollover on the northbound side of Interstate 93 near Dascomb Road.

After a vehicle flipped there, a driver and passenger made it out of the car safely. There were up and walking around when police and firefighters arrived, Connors said.

Those crash victims, who also weren’t identified by police last night, were taken to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment.
