Strong odor of natural gas in North Andover leads fire and gas co. crews on search

NORTH ANDOVER — The powerful smell of natural gas near the Burger King on Route 114 had crews from the fire department and gas company scrambling for answers last night.

Lt. Scott Nussbaum of the North Andover Fire Department said calls about the leak came in around 11 p.m.

He said firefighters combed the area, looking for broken meters or some other cause, but nothing was found, he said.

"We looked and Columbia Gas looked, but they couldn't find it either," he said. "We checked all the buildings but found nothing."

Columbia Gas spokeswoman Andrea Luppi said two survey crews spent last night and this morning looking for the leak, from the Middleton line to Lawrence and found nothing.

"They were looking for any kind of leak and didn't find anything," she said. "They worked all night on it."

She said it could have been a propane tank truck driving down the highway with a leak, which would have nothing to do with Columbia Gas.

"That has nothing to do with us," she said, adding that the company didn't have any propane tank trucks in the area last night.
