Police: Man sexually assaulted girl in Walmart

PLAISTOW — Police are searching for a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a 9-year-old girl in the toy aisle in Walmart Sunday night.

The alleged victim had briefly become separated from her parent, according to police. During that time, the male suspect approached the girl and touched her inappropriately, police said.

The suspect fled the store before police could respond.

The girl told a Walmart employee about the assault and that worker called police just before 8 p.m., Deputy police Chief Kathleen Jones said.

While the girl didn’t report any physical injury, she was treated by medical personnel as a precaution.

The child provided police with a physical description of the suspect and his image was captured by store surveillance cameras.

He is described as having short blond hair, and wore glasses, a black shirt, black pants and a gray hooded sweatshirt with a front zipper.

Security cameras also captured the man leaving the store at 58 Plaistow Road.

Surveillance images show him leaving the scene in a gray or beige pickup truck, believed to be a Chevrolet with a long bed, possibly bearing Massachusetts license plates.

An assistant manager at Walmart, who only identified himself as Matt, said yesterday evening he had not heard about the incident. Matt said he would not give his last name, citing company policy. He said he was not working on Sunday night.

Jones said yesterday police have three or four leads in the case.

Plaistow police are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect to call them at 382-1600.
