I-93 crash brings early evening traffic to a crawl

SALEM, N.H. — An accident in Interstate 93 just north of the Massachusetts border created a massive traffic jam early this evening.

The crash occurred in the southbound lane and involved a white pickup truck that was heavily damaged. It was unclear initially whether any other vehicles were involved or whether anyone was injured.

Despite the fact that police posted information on electronic highway message boards warning drivers about the crash and that the left two lanes would be closed as they approached the crash scene, drivers continued using the entire width of the highway, some cars even travelling in the breakdown lane.

That led to a large traffic jam as drivers got closer to the location of the crash, where all cars were forced into a single lane.

The pickup truck was being removed from the scene as drivers crept past it at 8:30 p.m.

No other details were available initially from police.
