Atkinson man arrested for car break-ins

HAMPSTEAD — An Atkinson man was charged Monday after police said he was responsible for a series of car break-ins.

Dustin MacLeod, 26, broke into two cars earlier this month, Lt. John Frazier said.

On Aug. 6, police were called to the PhanZone SportsCenter on Route 111 after a woman discovered her car had been broken into.

“The woman had observed her passenger window damaged and a purse was missing,” Frazier said.

Later that day, the woman received a call from her bank. The bank told her there had been three $200 withdrawals at the Stage Road convenience store on Route 121.

“We were able to get a physical description of him from a camera inside the ATM,” Frazier said.

Just more than a week later, MacLeod struck again, Frazier said. On Aug. 15, a woman at Hampstead Health and Fitness on Danville Road was leaving the club when she saw MacLeod in her car, according to police.

Frazier said MacLeod got in a physical altercation with the woman, before he escaped in his maroon Chevrolet Blazer. Shortly after, Detective Robert Kelly pulled him over and arrested him for simple assault, criminal mischief, possession of controlled drug (heroin) and robbery.

After he was arrested, police continued investigating MacLeod and received a search warrant to search his car. In the car, police found a .22 caliber handgun and a sword.

After several days of retrieving surveillance footage and bank records, MacLeod was charged Monday with three counts of identity fraud, receiving stolen property and two counts of being a felon with a dangerous weapon.

Frazier said MacLeod was convicted of conduct after an accident and driving while intoxicated in Plaistow in 2007. In that accident, his passenger sustained serious injuries, Frazier said.

MacLeod is being held in the county jail on $10,000 cash bail.
