Methuen man on ankle-bracelet caught dealing drugs

METHUEN — Police say a Methuen man wearing an electronic ankle bracelet for a previous criminal offense may have jeopardized his freedom yesterday when he got caught dealing drugs.

Jorge Alvarado, 34 of 32 Pine St., was one of four people arrested yesterday near his home during an investigation by the Methuen Police Department’s narcotics unit. He was charged with distribution of heroin, distribution of cocaine, illegal possession of cocaine and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

“He was on an ankle bracelet and said he had two years of jail time hanging over his head,” Methuen Police Chief Joseph Solomon said last night.

“Here’s somebody who gets a second chance, and he’s out on the street and blows it,” the chief said.

Alvarado was being held last night at the Essex County Jail in Middleton on $20,000 cash bail. Solomon said it wasn’t clear whether Alvarado was on house arrest awaiting trial or serving a home prison sentence under early release.

“We originally thought it (the bracelet) was from N.H., but couldn’t confirm that. The House of Correction will be able to track it,” Solomon said.

The chief credited a citizen’s tip for the police surveillance which led to the arrests.

“We got an anonymous tip Wednesday night that dealing was going on there (on Pine Street). The narcotics unit was lucky enough to go out and do surveillance,” Solomon said.

“The tipper said it was right out in the open. As soon as the officers set up, they saw the deal going down and they reacted. They did a great job,” he said.

Also charged were:

Jose Santos, 33 of 138 High St., 1st Floor, Haverhill, with distribution of heroin, distribution of cocaine and two counts of Illegal possession of cocaine.

John Thompson, 40 of Rochester, N.H., Illegal possession of heroin and illegal possession of cocaine.

Shana Lorber, 34 of Rochester, N.H., Illegal possession of heroin and illegal possession of cocaine.

Police seized $4,415 in cash, a small amount of heroin worth an estimate street value of $800 and a small amount of cocaine valued at $100.
