Two-time Merrimack College hockey captain Chris Barton, a native of Calgary, Alberta, signed an amateur tryout contract with the American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers Wednesday morning.
Bridgeport is an AHL affiliate of the NHL's New York Islanders.
Barton may be in the lineup Wednesday night when Bridgeport travels to Portland, Maine.
Barton ranked second on the Warriors this season with 25 assists and 39 points, leading Merrimack to its best season in school history and its first NCAA appearance since 1988.
He netted his 100th career point on Jan. 29, becoming the first Merrimack player to do so since 2002. He finished his collegiate career with 48 goals and 119 points in 141 career games.
Bridgeport has also signed Tyler McNeely (Northeastern), Joe Pereira (Boston University), and Brian Day (Colgate) in the last week to ATO contracts.
Merrimack finished the season with a 25-10-4 record, earning runner-up honors in the Hockey East Tournament for the first time ever.
