Thieves strike unlocked vehicles

Officers repeat plea for residents to lock car doors

NORTH ANDOVER — Despite repeated pleas by police for residents to lock their car doors at night, many people are still not following that advice — and it’s costing them.

During the last few days, 17 incidents of thefts from unlocked vehicles were reported to police. Lt. Charles Gray, spokesman for the Police Department, said those crimes are happening in all parts of town.

Gray and Chief Paul Gallagher have also urged residents to not keep valuable items, such as computers, GPS devices and iPods, in their cars. In July, $3,000 in cash was stolen from an unlocked vehicle on Stonington Street and $1,100 was taken from an unlocked vehicle on Massachusetts Avenue, police said.

During the last few days, no thefts from unlocked cars of that magnitude were reported in North Andover. In many instances, cars were rummaged through, but nothing was taken, police said.

A laptop and an unspecified amount of cash were stolen from a car at 136 Bridle Path. That theft was reported at 9:48 p.m. Monday.

Tools were stolen from a vehicle at 207 Winter St. sometime before 8 p.m. Monday.

There were also several incidents of loose change stolen. An iPad and an undetermined amount of cash were stolen from an unlocked car at 35 Peters St. The theft was reported at 11:41 a.m. Saturday.

A purse and $5 were stolen from a car at 33 Greenwood East Lane. The purse was found, but not the money, according to the police log. That theft was reported at 7:21 a.m. Thursday.
