---- — WINDHAM — Family and friends of Jonathan Zygmont, 19, a University of New Hampshire student, await identification results this morning from the state medical examiner.

A body found early yesterday in the Piscataqua River in Portsmouth matches the description of Zygmont and the clothes he was wearing when he was last seen Tuesday evening, UNH police said yesterday.

Zygmont, a Windham resident, was at the center of a search by UNH and local police for several days last week.

He was last seen near Prescott Park, in the same area where the body was recovered yesterday.

Police said they didn’t suspect foul play, but suggested Zygmont may have been despondent over relationship problems.

“We were greatly saddened to learn that police had recovered what is believed to be the body of our missing student,” UNH President Mark Huddleston said yesterday. “We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this very difficult time, and will continue to offer our support to the campus community and Jon’s loved ones.”

On Thursday, the first-year student’s mother, Lynne Zygmont of Windham, expressed hope her son may simply have gone hiking.

“He’s really an avid hiker,” Lynne Zygmont said last week. “Maybe he’s headed for the White Mountains or out West, maybe Wyoming or Colorado.”

She said her son enjoyed hiking and camping. He had traveled to Wyoming and Colorado this summer, she said.

Zygmont, who lived on campus at UNH, was studying wildlife and conservation.

He graduated earlier this year from Windham High School, where he was on the honor roll and wrestled for the school as a freshman.

Windham High principal Ryan Kaplan last week expressed the community’s support for the Zygmont family. His parents are divorced; his father lives in Concord.

The UNH Counseling Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 24-hour help is available by calling 862-2090.
