Biker's right to drive revoked since 1999

Before NY road rage, Mieses had dozens of violations

The Lawrence motorcycle rider critically injured Sunday in a wild New York City road rage incident has had his right to drive in Massachusetts revoked since 1999, according to state transportation records.

He also has had dozens of traffic violations, those records show.

Edwin Mieses Jr., 32, was run over by a Range Rover SUV on the Henry Hudson Parkway after a biker he was riding with collided with the SUV. Family members have said Mieses was in a coma after the crash and suffered serious internal and spinal injuries that could leave him paralyzed.

A lawyer for the family, Gloria Allred of Allred, Maroko & Goldberg in Los Angeles, declined to comment yesterday.

Mieses’ learner’s permit to drive a car was suspended in 1999 following a spate of violations in Lawrence, including speeding, failure to stop, attaching improper plates, driving without insurance and driving an unregistered vehicle, according to records from the Registry of Motor Vehicles. He never received a driver’s license for a car or motorcycle, the records show.

Since then, he has accumulated numerous violations for driving without being licensed, along with violations like speeding, driving to endanger and failure to stop, according to the records. Those violations extended the suspension on his right to drive.

Most recently, he was arrested on May 24 in Andover for driving without a license.

Family members posted on his Facebook page on Wednesday that Mieses is slowly waking up. His page and a page created by family titled “Justice for Jay Meezee,” one of Mieses’ nicknames, posted photos of him lying in a hospital bed with a tube in his mouth and injuries to his face.

A GoFundMe page created for Mieses’ family had raised $1,785 by 6 p.m. yesterday.

Mieses was riding with a group of other bikers on the Henry Hudson Parkway Sunday afternoon when one of the riders’ rear wheels collided with the front bumper of a Range Rover driven by Alexian Lien, 33. The SUV and several bikers, including Mieses, stopped on the parkway for a few moments, then the SUV sped forward, running over Mieses.
