Teen seriously injured in I-495 rollover in Haverhill

HAVERHILL — A teenage driver was ejected from an SUV that he was driving at a high speed and rolled over on Interstate 495 yesterday morning, public safety officials said.

The 18-year-old man from Lynn, whom officials did not identify, was seriously injured. The white Nissan SUV that went off the road at about 10:30 a.m. and into the median area.

Police believe the motorist was not wearing a seatbelt. Neither his name nor condition were released last night.

Fire Deputy Douglas Brown said the man landed in the passing lane while the Nissan came to rest on its wheels in the breakdown lane on the right hand side of the road.

“It was at high speed apparently,” Brown said.

The Nissan was the only vehicle involved, and the man was the only occupant. Haverhill rescuers transported him to Lawrence General Hospital, and from there he was flown to a Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

State Police said the 2003 Nissan Xterra, for reasons that are under investigation, went out-of-control then re-entered the roadway and rolled over numerous times.

Troopers were on the scene with the State Police reconstruction team. The left lane just south of the Route 125 overpass was closed, and a portion of the right lane was closed where the Nissan came to rest.

The rear window of the SUV was smashed and clothes hung out of the back.

The facts and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police. Haverhill Fire and Police assisted troopers at the scene, as did workers from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
