Flash flood watch in effect tonight

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for the region from 6 p.m. through late tonight.

Rainfall totals of one to three inches are likely across Northeastern Massachusetts this afternoon and tonight as Hurricane Earl passes southeast of Nantucket. It's possible that a band of heavier rain could develop and produce three to five inches of rain, the National Weather Service is warning. This could result in rapid flooding in urban and poor drainage areas, including roads and underpasses, as well as some small streams.

The weather service warns that people should not drive through flooded roads.
