Letter: It’s time to end Obama’s socialist experiment

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — To the editor:

Regarding the letter “Endorsement glosses over Republican deficiencies” by Stephen Porter (Sept. 11):

I am glad The Eagle-Tribune endorsed Mitt Romney at this time, and I hope it is not too late to change the direction our president has taken us. In a letter to the editor Stephen Porter thinks that this endorsement was made too early. I must disagree because even four years ago the choice was already very clear to me. A few days before the election, Barack Obama promised that we were five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America. For many this may have sounded like a harmless slogan but I knew immediately what he really meant.

My fears were based on a close study of Obama’s life-long immersion in left-wing causes, essentially unreported by the media. He was born to a leftist mother and a Kenyan Marxist father who, after abandoning his family, went working for the Kenyan government where he proposed that taxing 100 percent of income would be acceptable as long as people received adequate government services. It is well known that Obama was an active Marxist at Occidental College, Columbia University and Harvard but he himself has prevented these colleges from releasing any of his academic papers, perhaps to conceal his real agenda. He has brought into the White House employees that are open communists and admirers of Mao and Chavez. Then there are Obama’s right-hand woman Valerie Jarrett and chief strategist David Axelrod, both well- mentored by members of the Chicago leftist community.

Four years later my fears have been confirmed. His promised fundamental transformation has become a rapidly expanding socialist revolution guided by Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals”, the bible of community organizers. Everything Obama has done is a consequence of his rigid ideological beliefs, even those failed actions to revive the economy or improve international relations. Some mistakenly attribute his failures to incompetence, inexperience or lack of leadership.

The fact that socialism doesn’t work was known 236 years ago by the founders of America and that’s why they gave us a unique and exceptional kind of constitution. Margaret Thatcher had a good definition: “The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.” Winston Churchill said: “Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy.” The corpses of socialism are the Soviet Union, Mussolini’s fascism, Hitler’s national socialism and Mao’s China, with Greece and others being future candidates.

Experiments in big government always started with good intentions, great hopes, promises of fairness and egalitarianism. Often they were welcomed enthusiastically, but eventually they ended with loss of freedom, misery and dead bodies. But the true believers will never apologize, instead they will try again for the greater good, for social justice or whatever.

The founders of America, after intense study of human history, have given us a Constitution that should prevent the country from falling into tyranny. But they were also realistic as shown by Benjamin Franklin’s answer to a question about what kind of government America will have. Franklin replied: “A republic ... if you can keep it.” And here I believe that Mitt Romney is the right person to “keep it.”
