Letter: Thanksgiving dinner for elders was greatly appreciated

To the editor:

Continuing a tradition that fully illustrates the true meaning of Thanksgiving, the Georgetown Kiwanis Club hosted their annual dinner for elders at the Penn Brook School last Saturday.

Arriving at 6 a.m. to cook 22 21-pound turkeys, over 20 members of the Kiwanis Club members served Thanksgiving dinners to 250 elders including more than 30 home-delivered meals to local elders and others in the community. During a time of year when people often experience more than one type of hunger, the work and graciousness of the Kiwanis Club and several local volunteer groups brightened the lives of many of the elders in our community and raised the spirits of all those who participated in the annual event.

Rich with autumn colors, centerpieces featured ceramic vases filled with fall flowers created by the Georgetown Country Gardeners decorated each festively set table while volunteers from the Kiwanis Club, Builders Club and Georgetown High School Key Club provided plenty of fun conversation as they served plates filled with turkey and topped off with all of the traditional trimmings. Along with a nutritious home-cooked meal that included 150 pounds of potatoes, 50 pounds of green beans and 100 pounds of butternut squash, the annual dinner also fed participants’ well-being and souls with friendship and warm camaraderie, nurturing the value and significance of the social connections that truly exist within our community.

On behalf of the Georgetown Council on Aging, I would like to thank the Kiwanis Club, the Builders Club, the Georgetown High School Key Club, and the Georgetown Country Gardeners as well as all of the volunteers who gave the many hours of service needed to offer this annual event to elders. We are thankful for all of your kindness and generosity!
