The Greater Lawrence Community Action Council (GLCAC) has long been an integral organization for the city of Lawrence and the community of people it serves. After meeting Evelyn Friedman, the new executive director of the GLCAC, I am thrilled to see that the organization is back on the right track, allowing it to focus on the very important job it is tasked with.
Evelyn Friedman is highly respected – she comes to GLCAC as the former director of neighborhood development for the City of Boston and has three decades of professional experience in nonprofit management. GLCAC’s impact on the Merrimack Valley cannot be overstated – the organization served 29,000 people last year. Ms. Friedman’s leadership will put GLCAC in an even better position to serve the residents of the Merrimack Valley while using every dollar as efficiently and effectively as possible.
The agency has come a long way since last summer. It has reorganized its structure, put in whistle-blower protections and has helped move the city forward. In the past year alone, GLCAC has spent $3.7 million on construction projects with small businesses and contracted $1.8 million in services.
There are many people to thank for this turnaround: the Department of Housing and Community Development, Interim GLCAC Executive Director Christian Dame, the staff at GLCAC and the Board of Directors. Additionally, I would like to credit The Eagle-Tribune for the excellent investigative reporting that led to the personnel changes at GLCAC.
I am hopeful that under its new leadership, the Greater Lawrence Community Action Council can become one of the best nonprofit organizations this state has to offer.
