Letter: Our historical amnesia weakens our Constitution

To the editor:

It’s strange how history just keeps going round and round. In 1776, we fought like mad for individual liberty. On Nov. 6 of this year, we rallied for collective servitude. Go figure. It’s almost as though people get historical amnesia every few years.

Our Constitution is a guide for all authority to follow and the Bill of Rights is our individual protector from, amongst other things, a hostile government. Well, it now looks to me as though most could care less about foolish things like individual rights or even the Constitution.

History paints a glum picture for citizens who allow their leaders to rule over them with absolute power, especially with no accountability. We have been isolated from the rest of the world for many years because of our Constitution but I don’t think that many realize that today. People from around the world came to our shores, and knowledgeable people still do, for the protection that our Bill of Rights promises them.

I think that it is safe for me to say that we have lived on an island of relative tranquility. I have watched the Constitution being gradually weakened for many years but never like I have seen in the last six or seven.
