Letter: Support tax credits for clean energy

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — To the editor:

Fossil fuels currently dominate New Hampshire’s energy use. However, this dependence on unsustainable sources is drawing to a close, as more residents are choosing clean energy to run their homes. We can continue to make progress on environmentally friendly energy if the state supports legislation to do so.

There are 30,000 New Hampshire residents who currently rely on wind power. While this renewable source is important to many, New Hampshire has not yet reached its potential. According to the National Renewable Energy Lab, wind power could supply 60 percent of New Hampshire homes.

We will only reach this possibility if Congress acts to renew tax credits that expire at the end of this year. The production tax credit (PTC) and investment tax credit (ITC) both provide funds that support clean energy, which is crucial to making this technology available to a wider population.

I urge senators Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte to support clean energy incentives, such the renewal of the PTC and the ITC. I also ask Granite Staters to contact their congressmen and request that they support these measures to ensure the continued success of wind power. These tax credits will benefit New Hampshire as it looks forward to a cleaner future.
