Letter: Plaia is right choice for county attorney

The Eagle-Tribune

---- — To the editor:

The race for Rockingham County Attorney is one that most voters probably don’t pay much attention to, instead simply voting on party lines. But this year, there are important distinctions between the candidates that are not just based upon ideology. This is a choice between maintaining a costly and ineffective status quo or voting to replace complacency with innovation and fiscal responsibility.

Joe Plaia is an experienced law enforcement official, having served as a military policeman in the U.S. Marines and later as both a prosecutor and public defender. He is a practicing attorney who was raised and educated in New Hampshire.

Joe understands that we can’t be kept safe simply by locking up every offender, especially when doing so means we pay other counties over $1 million to house our prisoners in their facilities, as we do now.

Joe believes in using more modern, thoroughly vetted concepts like drug courts, a diversion program, and early case resolution for non-violent offenders. This focus on rehabilitation and reducing repeat offenses will allow us to reserve our jails for the most dangerous and violent offenders, keeping us safe without wasting taxpayers‘ money. I support Joe Plaia’s forward thinking approach.
