Ginger beer gives cocktail its kick

Harry and Izzy’s and its sister restaurant, St. Elmo Steak House of Indianapolis, Ind., know their cocktails. Not only that, they make classic cocktails.

The staff at Harry and Izzy’s try to keep the spirit of the Prohibition era with their spirits. In the accompanying video, Zach Wilks will show you how to create a classic cocktail, the Moscow Mule, which introduced vodka to America in 1950.

With only three ingredients and some crushed ice, you can chock up another beverage to your bartending skills. Even Oprah Winfrey has made a Moscow Mule. Traditionally served in a copper mug, the drink utilizes vodka, ginger beer and a wedge of lime to give you a refreshing beverage.

There are many variations of the Moscow Mule if your palate does not agree with vodka. Substitute Jagermeister for a Mule Meister, or maybe you’re in the mood for a Kentucky Mule, which substitutes bourbon. Any way you pour it, we are sure you will enjoy it.

Moscow Mule


3 ounces vodka

4 ounces ginger beer

1 wedge lime

1 cup crushed ice


1. Fill the mug with crushed ice.

2. Using a jigger, or other measuring device such as a shot glass, add the vodka to the mug of crushed ice.

3. Fill the remaining space in the mug with the ginger beer.

4. Squeeze the juice from one lime wedge into the mug, and leave the wedge in the mug as a nice garnish.
