METHUEN — A car accident Thursday afternoon escalated quickly into a violent confrontation involving a group of teenagers — one who pulled out a machete, according to police.
Two cars collided on Center Street. One of the cars involved was a yellow Honda Civic from Lawrence that was reported stolen earlier this month. Police said the passengers of the two cars were juveniles from Methuen and Lawrence.
A fight broke out among the six male teenagers when they left their vehicles. At one point, one of the passengers was seen waving a machete, according to police. The machete was knocked to the ground during the fight. However, a 16-year-old was stabbed in the back by a knife.
The teenagers from the stolen car fled. One of them was the stabbing victim, who was later found in Lawrence on Whitman Street. He was later transported to Lawrence General Hospital and was reported to be in stable condition, according to police.
As a result of an investigation by detectives, police arrested the 16-year-old who was suspected in the stabbing. He was arraigned in juvenile court yesterday.
Police said the investigation was continuing yesterday and more arrests are expected.
