Merrimack Valley Idol to be crowned Saturday

Nine talented performers from the region will put their vocal skills to the test Saturday when they compete for the title of Merrimack Valley Idol.

Quota International of Andover is hosting the second annual competition on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Wyndham Andover, 123 Old River Road, Andover.

At stake for the contestants is $500 in prize money and a chance to open for the New England Tenors at a February performance at the Rogers Center for the Arts at Merrimack College in North Andover.

The contestants and the songs they will be performing are:

Heather Alfano of Salem, N.H.: “Beautiful,” Christina Aguilera.

Nurilys Cintron of Lawrence: “I am Changing,” from “Dreamgirls.”

Emma Harris of Andover: “You Lost Me,” Christina Aguilera.

Jillian Knopping of North Andover: “Falling Slowly,” from “Once.”

Megan Lally of Salem, N.H.: “Rolling in the Deep,” Adele.

Anna McCabe of Lawrence: “Someone Like You,” Adele.

Josef Nocera of Newburyport: “That’ll Be the Day,” Buddy Holly.

Dakota O’Driscoll of Dunstable: “At Last,” Etta James.

Jamie Dyan Taker of Haverhill: “If I Loved You,” from “Carousel.”

The judges for the event are local celebrities Mike Fay of Hampton. N.H., Elizabeth Sarantos of Andover, and Rebecca Farnham of Lowell.

Fay, founder of TTS (That’s The Spirit), operates local youth sports and theater programs, is a theater producer-performer and the creator of the New England Tenors. He is returning for a second year as a judge.

Farnham is an opera singer and director at Treble Chorus of New England. She also teaches piano and voice privately and educates young artist-actors in local community theater and Shakespeare. She toured Germany with the Lyric Opera Studio performing Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” and studied Opera in Verona, Italy as part of Opera Viva!

Sarantos, a private reading and writing tutor, is a chorus member and serves on the board of directors of New England Classical Singers and is a member of The Choral Majority gospel choir. She has performed in solo recitals and has sung with the Lawrence Choral Arts Society and the Master Singers of Lexington.
