Scenes from a Different World

A close-up look at the Veragua rain forest

Photos by Frank J. Leone, Jr.

On a recent trip to Central America, photojournalist Frank J. Leone, Jr., captured these images at the Veragua Rain Forest in Limon, Costa Rica. This 3,200-acre protected forest canopy sits 1,800 feet above sea level, at the base of the Costa Rican mountain range.

The research center operates in partnership with the University of Costa Rica and their Inbio Labratory monitors the snake, frog and butterfly inhabitants for research. They discover new species of butterflies almost on a daily basis and provide educational tours for visitors to their natural rain forest habitat.
