The New England String Ensemble opens its 15th season at the Roger's Center for the Arts with the premiere of a new arrangement of "Romanian Rhapsody No. 1," a composition by George Enesc.
Composed for a full symphony orchestra without soloist, the new arrangement will feature violinist Irina Muresanu.
The New England String Ensemble, along with Muresanu, commissioned the new arrangement for violin and string orchestra from Romanian composer Cristian Lolea.
Concertgoers will also hear Schubert's Rondo in A and Lutoslawski's Preludes and Fugue.
The concert will conclude with Schubert's "Death and the Maiden," which has been rearranged for a string orchestra, said Ben Hires, executive director of the New England String Ensemble.
Hires said the ensemble was scheduled to perform the piece earlier in the year, but had to postpone the program because Music Director Federico Cortese became sick.
"Death and the Maiden" is the most difficult piece on the program, Hires said.
The New England String Ensemble's other concerts this season will include "Innocent Voices" in November, featuring the United States premier of "Children's Mass" by Boston Children's Chorus. In February, "Classical Devotion" will feature Lydia Ding, the 2008 String Competition Winner. April's program is "Ballets Russes."
