Teenager charged with stealing from unlocked car

By Paul Tennant

---- — NORTH ANDOVER — A 16-year-old boy was arrested and charged with entering an unlocked car Sunday night and stealing assorted items, police said.

A caller to police reported at 7:49 p.m. that two boys dressed in hooded sweat shirts had stolen things from a car parked at 700 Chickering Road and fled on bicycles. Officer Robert Barter caught one of the suspects and arrested him, police said.

Police are looking for the other suspect, according to Lt. Charles Gray. The boy who was captured was charged with breaking and entering in the night, larceny and being a minor under 21 in possession of liquor.

He was held at a secure juvenile facility in Lowell pending his arraignment in the juvenile session of Lawrence District Court, Gray said.

The alertness of the person who made a prompt call to the police, as well as Barter’s efficiency in going to the scene and catching the young suspect were the major factors in bringing about the arrest, Gray said.

He also repeated his often-stated plea that residents lock their cars at night.
