It certainly wasn’t as easy for people to write a lot of that snotty (stuff) once I was public about what was going on, I will say that. But I didn’t really want to use that as a way of getting better reviews. It was way too serious for that.
Q. So how are you now? Are you at peace with everything or are you still looking to prove something?
A. The truth is, you just want to make good records and keep playing. I love the record we made last year. I really love “Underwater Sunshine.” It might be the most enjoyable of our records. I could make albums of other peoples’ songs for the rest of my career and be perfectly happy because it was so rewarding.
It’s very satisfying to have sort of figured out who you are in life, in one sense, and then to make something out of that. We will have left some pretty cool stuff behind when it’s all done, which I don’t think has to be anytime soon. I mean, we’re playing the best shows of our careers right now.
