NORTH ANDOVER — The Rogers Center for the Arts at Merrimack College is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a gala party.
Opened in 1999, this 29,000-square-foot center has hosted more than 50,000 people in its 600-seat theater and gallery over the decade.
"It went by so quickly — we have come such a long way," said Executive Director Maureen Lanigan. "This building was just an empty building and we infused it with life. We offer entertainment, enjoyment and education to thousands of people every year."
Performers have included local, national and international acts. Loretta LaRoche, Judy Collins and the Kingston Trio have been among the center's biggest show.
Regular performers at the Rogers Center include the student theater group the OnStagers, the school's jazz ensemble, Merrimack Valley Philharmonic Orchestra, New England Civic Ballet, Pentucket Players, New England Classical Singers, Andover Choral Society, Andover Chamber Music Series and the Treble Chorus of New England.
"We are the place to be in the Merrimack Valley," Lanigan said. "People love the theater. It's beautiful to begin with. It's convenient. And they love coming on the campus of Merrimack as well."
On March 25, arts and entertainment critic Joyce Kulhawik will host a party in honor of the anniversary at the Rogers Center for the Arts. The event will focus on the center's involvement on the college's campus and community at large.
"The Merrimack campus and the greater community wouldn't be the same without the artistic contributions of the Rogers Center for the Arts," said college President Dr. Ronald Champagne. "I congratulate the center on 10 years of success and wish for another productive decade."
Lanigan is looking forward to the next 10 years at the Rogers Center.
"It has a life of its own now. It has a heart and a pulse," she said. "We have come a long way in 10 years."
