---- — Renowned fiddler Hanneke Cassel brings licks and riffs to the stage in a benefit performance for the Up With Music violin programs in the Lawrence schools.
Scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 17, the concert at North Andover Middle School also will feature cellist Mike Block and guitarist Christopher Lewis.
Cassel’s connection to Up With Music, a non-profit founded by Trudy Larson of North Andover and Marcia Lier of Andover, began with teaching fiddling at the summer strings camp in Lawrence.
“Hanneke has been a very special part of Up With Music’s program for many years, working with students from Community Strings in both our summer camps and during the year,” Larson said. “She is an extraordinary performer and an exciting, energetic teacher -- nurturing and inspiring many of our young students to become proficient fiddlers.”
Up With Music started with the Community Strings Program 15 years ago, with just three students enrolled. Today Up With Music’s programs reach nearly 100 students each year in Lawrence schools.
Up With Music includes Community Strings at the Community Day Charter Public School and four latchkey after-school programs, as well as programs at Esperanza Academy for Girls and Up Academy, and the summer strings camp.
Up With Music providing music training to studnets through violin group classes and performances with the goals of increasing the students’ self-image, building healthy peer relationships, and providing leadership training through mentoring.
