Lawyers receive extension in Solomon case

BOSTON — Lawyers in fired Methuen police Chief Joseph Solomon's civil service hearing now have until July 15 to file their final briefs, officials said yesterday.

Lawyers on both sides were previously given until yesterday to submit proposed decisions. They are to write how they believe the commission should rule. They requested an extension and now have until July 15.

Methuen Mayor William Manzi fired Solomon in May 2008, citing several alleged wrongdoings, such as mismanagement of federal grants. Solomon appealed the firing to the Civil Service Commission, and the commission held a hearing over several months. After attorneys file their proposed decisions, the commission will rule on whether Solomon should have his job back.
