TAUNTON, Mass. — The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for noretheastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire from now until 3:15 today.

Today at noon, the Weather Service issued the advisory for people living in Essex County, including Andover, Haverhill, Lawrence and Methuen, as well as for communities surrounding the Southern New Hampshire towns of Salem and Derry.

According to the Weather Service, "radar indicates that up to one-half inch of rain in one hour will fall in some of the thunderstorms. This is expected to produce ponding of water in low-lying and poor drainage areas early this afternoon."

Flash flood watches are also in effect for Southern New Hampshire.

Back on the home front

LAWRENCE — Some eighth graders at Wetherbee School enjoy playing "Call of Duty," a video game about U.S. Marines in combat.
But yesterday, the students were told flat out war is not a game.
"It's for real and it's for keeps," said Lance Cpl. Daniel Ilacqua, a member of company B, 1st Battalion, 25th Marines.

Marine gets big welcome

NORTH ANDOVER — When Cpl. Michael Hennessy comes home tomorrow after serving four years in the United States Marine Corps, a huge welcome will be awaiting him.
The selectmen on Monday night unanimously approved a request to decorate the Old Common with yellow ribbons, flags, bunting and a welcome home banner. Members of the North Andover Patriotic Observance and Marching Committee started working on the display Thursday.

Gym damage forces shift of voting site

NORTH ANDOVER — A wayward basketball has wreaked havoc on the sports schedule at North Andover High School and forced a temporary change of venue for voting.
A basketball tossed during a gym class Feb. 1 struck a sprinkler head and a torrent of water gushed onto the floor of the fieldhouse, according to Superintendent Christopher Hottel. Until the floor is fixed, home basketball games will be played at Merrimack College, gym classes will be moved to other locations, and the fieldhouse will be closed, he said.
