Lawrence cops use stolen GPS to locate owner

LAWRENCE — Guided by the home address stored on a stolen Global Positioning System, police were able to return the $300 device to a North Andover man this week.

The GPS was retrieved by police Wednesday after they arrested Juan Gonzales, 27, of 26 Phillips Court, North Andover, at the corner of Parker and Farnham streets.

Police said they believe Gonzales, who was charged with receiving stolen property over $250, may also be involved in the theft of a laptop computer from a parked sport utility vehicle on Parker Street.

Gonzales was arrested again Thursday on charges of failing to appear in Lawrence District Court after a police officer spotted him on Water Street.

Lawrence police Chief John Romero said police used the home address stored on the GPS to contact the owner. The Main Street resident later went to the station to retrieve it, he said.
