Postal clerk helps save the day for fallen man

NORTH ANDOVER — Colleagues at the North Andover Post Office are calling Sheryl Croteau "a hero" for a good deed she did last Saturday on her way to work.

Croteau, 51, of Amesbury, was leaving her daughter's house in Chelmsford, when she passed by a liquor store parking lot and noticed what looked like a body lying on the ground.

As she got closer, she could tell it was an elderly man who didn't appear to be moving sprawled out in the rain.

"I didn't know if it was somebody who had passed out or somebody who had been murdered," said Croteau, who went across the street and dialed 911 on her cell phone.

"All I could think of was 'that's a human being lying there. So, I did what I thought any decent human being or responsible person would do - call the police," she said. Croteau has worked 15 years for the Lawrence area postal service, for the past several years out of the North Andover branch.

After playing the role of good Samaritan, Croteau headed off to work.

Once she arrived, co-workers noticed that she was upset about something. They encouraged her to call, to check up on the welfare of the man she found.

Croteau later learned from the police that the man had fallen down, hurt himself and needed quick medical attention. They were in touch with his daughter.

Initially troubled about the man's health, Croteau felt better after talking with police and knowing that her call may have helped save him from danger.

"It's such a feel good story that if we knew the customers, we told them about it," said postal clerk Jim Silverman.

"I think she did a tremendous job to help this man in distress. So, I've been telling customers all morning that we have a hero amongst us." Silverman said.
