St. James celebrates feast of patron saint

HAVERHILL — St. James Parish celebrates the feast of its patron saint today and Sunday.

There will be entrees made by American, Spanish and Vietnamese parishioners, as well as music, a yard sale and a carwash.

On Sunday, the rosary will be recited at 10 a.m., in all three languages. Social and spiritual events will follow until 3 p.m.

St. James Church, considered the mother parish of Haverhill, was established in 1859. It originally ministered to the newly arrived Irish and today welcomes Hispanic and Vietnamese immigrants.

The parish is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.

On Nov. 8, Cardinal Sean O'Malley will celebrate the anniversary Mass, which will be followed by dinner at Atkinson Country Club in New Hampshire. Tickets are $27 for adults and $15 for children.

First Church Congregational, 26 Pleasant St., Methuen: Matt Burns leads a workshop on the Hindu practice of Chakra balancing Wednesday at 7 p.m. Burns will use movement, meditation, speech and dance to explore the seen spiritual centers of the body.

Celebrating the 12 Gifts of Birth is the theme of the summer Sunday school, now through Aug. 30.

First Congregational, 15 Lawrence Road, Salem, N.H.: Wednesday evening summer worship services now through Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. A buffet supper offered at 6 p.m. Cost is $3 per person or $8 per family. Proceeds will benefit the church's scholarship fund.

St. Mark the Evangelist, One South Road Londonderry, N.H.: The Women of Mary meet Aug. 1 at 7 a.m. to honor the Blessed Mother with adoration of the blessed sacrament, Chaplet of the divine mercy and rosary. Mass follows.

Parishioners, along with members of St. Jude, will run two separate programs on Theology of the Body course for adults and high-school students Sept. 21 to Nov. 16, 7 to 9 p.m.

St. Mary Immaculate Conception Cemeteries and Mausoleum, 29 Barker St., Lawrence: Mass for the intention of the souls buried or entombed in the cemetery Aug. 1, 8:30 a.m.
