NORTH ANDOVER — A family of young coyotes has apparently made a home in the woods near Annie Sargent School, according to police Lt. Charles Gray.
A resident called police at 4:44 p.m. Friday to report a young fox was chasing a jogger along Abbott Street. The animal then ventured onto the grounds of Sargent School, 300 Abbott St. The jogger later called police and said the animal followed him but did not attack him, according to the police log.
Gray said further investigation showed the animal was most likely a coyote, not a fox. Police believe some young coyotes abandoned by their mother have found a home in the woods near the school, which is located in an outlying part of town that’s close to woods, Gray said.
“We had four calls about the coyotes on Friday,” he said. Police do not think the coyotes are a threat to students, who will begin attending school in another month.
“We are monitoring the situation,” Gray said. He noted coyotes generally stay away from humans.
Those with concerns about coyotes are advised to call Animal Control Officer Amy McCarthy at 978-683-3168.
