SALISBURY — The owners of a popular, longtime Haverhill restaurant are poised to expand their reach farther into Salisbury.
Brothers Steve and George Haginicolas, the owners of Haverhill’s Roma Restaurant, are pursuing the purchase of the recently closed Stripers Grille and Inn just over the bridge from Newburyport.
Stripers and the Roma, located in the Bradford section of Haverhill, share some similarities. Both have exterior decks, are situated overlooking the Merrimack River and have function capabilities.
The Haginicolas brothers, who together operate Mark John Corp., purchased the 440-seat Roma in 2000. The restaurant’s menu features primarily Italian and Greek cuisine.
Steve Haginicolas said if the deal goes through, the brothers, who immigrated to America from Greece as boys, have no intention of closing or selling Roma.
In spring 2011, the brothers bought the Newburyport restaurant property at 140 High St. for $340,000, plus outstanding taxes, at a foreclosure auction. But instead of opening their own restaurant, as they considered, they now lease the site to the owners of Mr. India Restaurant. It previously was home to The Mall Restaurant, BluWater and Cafe Europe,
Steve Kucher and his wife, Lisa Reinhold, have owned Stripers for 16 years and closed the doors in February, orginally for repairs. Kuchar told members of the Salisbury Liquor Licensing Commission recently that after further consideration, the couple decided it was time to sell due to fatigue.
“It was a great run,” Kuchar told the commissioners. “It’s just that I’m pooped. It’s time to go.”
Steve Haginicolas, who has worked in the restaurant field for 27 years, also owns a small commercial plaza in Salisbury at 111 Lafayette Road. The brothers also own King’s Subs & Pizza in Andover and South Lawrence, as well as Pizza Man in Merrimack, N.H., and Pizzeria Roma in Milford, N.H.
If all goes according to plans, the sale of Stripers may move closer to fruition next week.
