---- — METHUEN - The Trauma Intervention Program of Merrimack Valley seeks participants and sponsors for its 6th annual TIP Family 5K Run/Walk set for Sunday, Nov. 4
Money raised will help fund the ongoing development of a healing garden at Henry P. Schruender Memorial Park in Methuen and other TIP programs. The Methuen-based nonprofit organization runs a 24-hour on-call service of volunteers who provide emotional first aid to traumatized children and adults in the Merrimack Valley.
TIP began the run/walk six years ago in memory of the late Brenda Waller, a longtime TIP volunteer who continued to assist victims of traumatic or tragic events while fighting a decade-long battle with cancer until her death Nov. 2, 2006. The event is a major fundraiser for the group that serves Andover, Haverhill, Lawrence, North Andover and Methuen.
The walk will begin 10:30 a.m. from the Claddagh Restaurant and Pub, 339 Canal St., Lawrence with the run scheduled to follow at 11 a.m. Pre-entry fee up until Oct. 29 is $20; post entry fee is $25. Or contestants can participate for free if they have $50 in sponsorship pledges. Checks should be made payable to TIP of Merrimack Valley and can be mailed to TIP Family 5K, 68 Main St., Suite 8, Andover, MA 01810. Or call 978-975-8471 for details.
Free food and refreshments will be served at the Claddagh following the walk/run. The top three winners in each of eight age categories will receive a medal. Walkers will be entered with a chance to win a prize. TIP will present T-shirts to the first 200 entrants.
TIP volunteers undergo special training to prepare them for work with community first responders that include police, firefighters, EMTs and local hospitals in emergency situations. They respond all hours of the day to help victims of traumatic events such as serious car crashes, fires, drownings, suicides and sudden deaths.
