---- — NORTH ANDOVER — The Fire Department is now enforcing new, stricter state regulations on the placement of mulch.
Lt. Fred McCarthy, fire prevention officer for the local department, said new mulch cannot be spread next to buildings with more than six units. If the building is made of a fireproof material such as brick, the rule does not apply, he said.
Mulch, McCarthy pointed out, is a very combustible material.
“It doesn’t take much for a cigarette to start a mulch fire,” he said. The State Fire Marshal’s Office proposed the new rules after some serious fires were sparked by burning mulch, he explained.
