NORTH ANDOVER — Police charged five suspects with stealing merchandise from stores in the North Andover Mall during the weekend.
Ana Vasquez, of 7 West Dalton St., Lawrence, was issued a summons at 1:30 p.m. Saturday by Officer Matthew Zahoruiko for shoplifting at Kohl’s Department Store, 360 Winthrop Ave.
Four and a half hours later, Officer Michael Hennessy arrested Xindy Frassato de Marino, 29, and Jean Pier Marino, both of 11 Topping Road, Andover, for shoplifting at Market Basket, 350 Winthrop Ave.
Hennessy issued a summons to Daniel Hoffenberg, 37, of 41 Lyman Road, for shoplifting at Market Basket at 11:25 p.m. Saturday.
Renee Anthony, of 101 Lowell Ave., Haverhill, received a summons from Officer Eric Sewade at Kohl’s at around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Whether a shoplifting suspect is issued a summons or arrested depends on the person’s criminal record and how cooperative he or she is, explained Lt. Charles Gray, spokesman for the North Andover Police Department.
Gray noted many shoplifting suspects have multiple offenses of stealing from stores. Chief Paul Gallagher is “adamant” that shoplifters should face criminal charges and not merely be told not to return to the stores from which they stole merchandise, Gray said.
