Project Bread awards over $225K to food programs

BOSTON — Project Bread, the state’s leading anti-hunger organization, has awarded $226,650 in grants to emergency food programs in the northeastern part of the state, including the Bread and Roses Soup Kitchen in Lawrence, through funds raised by the 44th annual Walk for Hunger.

The grants will support programs such as food pantries, schools, farms, food banks, food salvage programs, and other community organizations providing hunger relief. Over 43,000 supporters walked to raise money to help the hungry.

Statewide, over 430 food programs received grants from Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger in 125 communities across the state. Below is a partial list of grant recipients in the northeastern area. For a complete listing, visit www.projectbread.org/fundedagencies.

Other recipients include Our Neighbor’s Table in Amesbury, Beverly Bootstraps Community Services and Open Pantry of Greater Lowell.

Two local authors visit Andover Bookstore

ANDOVER — Tiffany Schmidt, author of “Send Me a Sign” and AC Gaughen, author of “Scarlet”, will be reading from their young adult fiction novels and discussing what it’s like to be a first-time author on Nov. 19 at the Andover Bookstore.

Schmidt was raised in North Andover and went on to study English and elementary education at Lehigh University. Gaughen was born and raised in Hingham and attended Mount Holyoke College before going to Scotland to finish her education. She now lives in Somerville.

They will be at Andover Bookstore at 7 p.m. Their books will be on sale and the authors will be available for questions and signing after their presentation. Teens, parents, librarians and book lovers are particularly encouraged to attend.

Strikers monument reception is Nov. 16 in Lawrence

LAWRENCE — The Strikers’ Monument Committee is hosting an installation reception Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Strikers’ monument, across from City Hall, 200 Common St. A reception follows at Lawrence Heritage State Park Visitor’s Center, 1 Jackson St. For information, contact cochairs Dave Meehan at 978-683-2182 and Jonas Stundza at 978-685-4478 or send an email to monument1912strike@hotmail.com.
