LAWRENCE — A 20-year old man told police Monday that he bought a handgun in Lawrence because “some people wanted to kill him.”
Rafael Torres Jr., of 11 Elder St., #1, Dorchester, was arrested Monday afternoon and charged with illegal possession of a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license and illegal possession of a large capacity firearm.
Police got a tip on Monday that Torres was in the Haverhill Street area, wearing a black and green camouflage jacket and carrying a black handgun in his waistband, according to a report by Detective Robert LeFebre.
Surveillance was set up in the area and police saw Torres get into the cab at Haverhill and Crescent streets.
With backup officers called to the area, police pulled over the cab. Officers found a .38 caliber handgun in the front waist band area of Torres’ pants. Lefebre also found a black clip containing 8, .38 caliber cartridges in Torres’ right back pocket.
During booking, Torres told police he bought the gun in Lawrence because his life was in danger.
