Man sought for high-heel assault in Methuen now

METHUEN — After charges were dropped against a woman, police are now looking for a man who beat another man with a high-heeled shoe in a brawl earlier this month.

On Sunday, Dec. 8, a woman was initially arrested and charged with assaulting Jose Mercado, 31, with a high-heeled shoe, resulting in a skull fracture and brain hemorrhage. The charge was filed after police investigated an assault at 76 Center St. and found Mercado “passed out on the floor with obvious injury to his head,” according the report.

But charges against the woman were dropped after police obtained surveillance video from the area and saw a man assaulting Mercado with the shoe, said Methuen Police Detective Sgt. Steve Smith.

Police are now trying to identify the man, he said.

In the video, obtained from a nearby home security system, the unidentified man is clearly seeing hitting Mercado “with the shoe in the side of the head. Then he falls to the ground,” Smith said.

Mercado almost immediately loses consciousness and drops to the pavement.

Mercado, of North Andover, was initially treated at Lawrence General Hospital and later transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. In addition to a fractured skull, Mercado was also diagnosed with a front brain bleed.

Smith said Mercado’s condition is improving.

That morning, when police went to 76 Center St., they found a trail of blood that led them to a second floor apartment where Mercado lay injured.
