BOSTON – Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Boston has announced that Ethel Higgins has joined the non-profit as the Assistant Director of the North and Merrimack Valley divisions headquartered in Lowell and Lynn.

As Assistant Director, Higgins will oversee staff and social services programs as well as cultivate new and existing collaborations with local parishes and community organizations.

Merrimack Valley Catholic Charities serves 30,000 people in need each year in Lowell, Lawrence, Haverhill and 28 surrounding communities through a wide range of programs including food, fuel, rent, and utility assistance. In addition to basic needs services, programing includes GED preparation for young parents, job search services, a program for grandparents serving as parents, and Brigid’s Crossing, a residential program for pregnant and parenting teens.

“We are very happy to welcome Ethel,” said Virginia Doocy, Director of Catholic Charities North and Merrimack Valley. “She brings a wealth of experience in service to the mission of Catholic Charities.”

Higgins comes to Catholic Charities with 20 years of experience in the social services sector and 12 years in various Catholic Charities organizations. Most recently, Higgins was Director of Case Management Services and Disaster Response at Catholic Charities Atlanta where she provided leadership to case management staff, built community relations and partnerships, and trained parishes and community agencies on disaster response preparedness.

Higgins is actively involved with Catholic Charities USA serving as Chair of the Racial Equality and Diversity Initiative and a Peer Reviewer for the Council on Accreditation.

“Having worked at Catholic Charities in Georgia and in Connecticut, I am excited to continue to serve the community in my new role with Catholic Charities of Boston,” said Higgins. “I look forward to learning about the services and needs of the people in Merrimack Valley community.”
