Coast Guard pulls downed parachutist from water

PLUM ISLAND — A Coast Guard crew pulled a male paraglider from the water after he went down off the coast of Plum Island late this afternoon.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Merrimack River received a report from a good Samaritan shortly before 5 p.m. of a paraglider who had crashed into the water off the coast of Plum Island, according to the Coast Guard Boston office.

A 47-foot motor lifeboat from Station Merrimack River was immediately launched and safely pulled the man from the water and transported him to awaiting EMS. He was then taken by ambulance to Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport.

His condition is unknown.

The on scene air temperature was 28 degrees and water temperature was 38 degrees.

No information was available on the identity of the victim, who was described as unconscious and unresponsive when pulled from the water.
