Two badly hurt in 2-car crash on I-93

ANDOVER — Two people were seriously injured in a two-car crash on Interstate 93 at around 10 p.m. yesterday.

The accident happened on the southbound side of I-93 near the Dascomb Road exit. State police from the Andover barracks closed the entire southbound side to allow a helicopter to land and take one of the victims to a Boston hospital.

The other victim was transported to Lawrence General Hospital by an Andover Fire Department ambulance. Firefighters had to extricate one of the victims from a vehicle, according to fire Deputy Chief Kevin Connors.

The helicopter landed at 10:22 p.m. and left within 15 minutes. Three engines, the ladder truck and a command vehicle from the Andover Fire Department as well as paramedics from Lawrence General Hospital responded to the accident.

Traffic on the southbound side was backed up for about a mile. The rear end of one of the cars involved in the accident was pushed up against a guardrail.

The accident is being investigated by the state police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section.
