ANDOVER — The Center at Punchard/BoomerVenture, 30 Whittier Court, is offering a series of five Thursday afternoon lectures beginning April 3 called “North and South: Why The Civil War Happened.”
The series, to be presented by local historian Don Robb, is in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War battle of Spotsylvania, where many Andover soldiers died.
Participants will examine historic data and reflect on statements and actions by people including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Harriet Beecher Stowe, John Brown, Sojourner Truth and Lincoln. Each session will also make links between national events and incidents in Andover. The sessions will explore two interconnected questions: When did the Civil War really start and was the Civil War fought about slavery?
The sessions will be held Thursdays April 3, April 10, April 17, April 24 and May 1 from 2-3:30 p.m. The cost for the series is $15 and advance registration is necessary. For information call: (978)623-8321.
